Job Description:
The Ifakara Health Institute seeks a qualified and experienced Laboratory Technologist to perform laboratory testing essential for managing patients with HIV and/or TB. The role involves collaboration with the hospital, governmental authorities, and the research platform of the Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO) in Ifakara.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform laboratory testing on blood samples and biological fluids, including full blood picture, chemistry, CD4, viral load, resistance testing, crag screening, and culture.
- Conduct maintenance and quality control on laboratory equipment.
- Implement quality control measures and quality assurance for laboratory tests.
- Enter data into the computer.
- Manage biobank samples and organize the biobank.
- Share knowledge and train team members as needed.
- Participate in national and international networks, meetings, and conferences.
- Develop research projects, perform research, and write manuscripts.
- Contribute to studies within KIULARCO and other IHI projects initiated through the Chronic Disease Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI).
- Write SOPs for handling lab testing and quality assurance.
- Attend compulsory meetings at CDCI and other IHI/hospital meetings.
- Assist in planning, coordinating, and supporting research activities organized by IHI and other partners.
- Carry out additional tasks as instructed by the Project Leader and/or Director of St. Francis Referral Hospital.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Medical Laboratory, Zoology, or a related field.
- Experience working with HIV/TB patients.
Requirements:
- Fluency in Swahili and English.
- Interest in TB/HIV.
- High motivation for research activities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style.
- Ability to build and sustain relationships with senior professionals.
- Professional attitude and clear work ethic.
- Result-oriented.
